  • According to Advanced Screening Solutions, what is the average life span of a fiberglass screen?

Phifer® Fiberglass insect screening typically lasts 7 to 10 years with an extended lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Builder-grade screens typically last 5 to 7 years with an extended lifespan of 7 to 10 years. Results may vary, depending on your exposure and care.

  • In the opinion of Advanced Screening Solutions, what is the average life span of a polyester screen?

The average life span of Super Screen® is 10- to 20 years. It is a thicker synthetic polyester coated with nylon. Regular screens are fiberglass coated with vinyl.

  • What does Advanced Screening Solutions suggest is the best way to clean my screens and aluminum?

Use Simple Green® or a mild detergent with light brushing and rinsing with a hose at low pressure. Over time, chlorine bleach or any caustic chemical will deteriorate the screen and cause damage to the material as well as the aluminum paint finish.

  • According to Advanced Screening Solutions, why do all of my screws rust?

Standard steel screws are a painted zinc-coated fastener. When they are screwed in, they lose some of the coating, causing a dissimilar metal reaction otherwise known as electrolysis. Additional corrosives such as chlorine or salt from pools and other caustic chemicals such as bleach may aid in the rusting of the screws. There are other fastener options available - such as stainless steel - that will help with longevity.

  • What does Advanced Screening Solutions recommend I do if I am noticing missing screws on the bottom of my enclosure?

You should have them checked. If some are missing, more than likely more are bad. This is one of the only things holding your enclosure down. Without them, the enclosure may fail and collapse during a storm.

  • Does Advanced Screening Solutions know what the cables on my enclosure are for? Should I worry if one is broken?

The hurricane anchor cable prevents your enclosure from shifting back and forth in the wind, ensuring that your fasteners do not fail. If one is broken, you should have it replaced as soon as possible as these prevent your enclosure from blowing over.

  • Does Advanced Screening Solutions know why my screen door doesn’t close properly?

It may be time to change your door hardware kit, or the hinges could be bad. Also, your frame might need adjusting due to a settling deck.

  • Does Advanced Screening Solutions know if they make pet doors for screen enclosures or screened-in rooms?

Yes, they make varying sizes for small cats and dogs all the way up to medium and large breeds. With limited sizing based on the pet, there are pet doors available in the screen doors. Schedule an appointment for sizing and placement for your pet door(s).

  • My gutters are always full of leaves and water will run over. What can Advanced Screening Solutions do about it?

Keeping your gutters clean and clear of debris is essential for water flow. Depending on the size and layout of your gutters, we can determine options such as increasing the size of the gutters or downspouts or installing gutter guards to prevent debris from filling the gutters up. Leaving gutters full of debris can damage roofing and decking, and potentially lead to damaged or rotted wood due to overflowing. Installing splash guards can also help in preventing water from missing or spilling over the gutter.

  • Does Advanced Screening Solutions know why my screens are silvery looking?

This is because the vinyl has worn down over the years due to sun exposure, and your screen has reached its life expectancy. What you are seeing is the fiberglass showing through. This is when tearing, fraying, or loosening of the screen will occur.

  • Does concrete installation by Advanced Screening Solutions require a permit?

Most concrete installers are not pulling a permit. Some jurisdictions allow concrete up to a certain square footage to be poured without a permit. These slabs may NOT be built on. If you intend to build, then a permit is required due to a structural footing needing to be installed to support a structure.

  • Do paver installations by Advanced Screening Solutions require a permit?

Generally, no, however, if you wish to build on them you will need a structural footer, which does require a permit.

  • Does installing a screen room, pool enclosure, covered lanai, or front entryway require a permit?

Yes, in most jurisdictions. The best way to know for sure is to call your local building department and ask them. However, only a licensed contractor can perform the install.

  • My screen guy says I can pull a permit and he can install my enclosure, is this true?

You can pull your own permit however if you pull your own permit, you assume all responsibility and liability for the project. If someone is working on your job and gets injured, you are liable.  knowingly and willingly hiring an unlicensed contractor is punishable by a state fine of up to $10,000.

  • Is a deposit typically required?

All companies have different policies. Usually, a deposit is only required for building projects. If a company is asking for a deposit for a rescreen or repair, you may want to consider another company.  Reference the company's payment terms prior to hiring or starting any work.
